One of the Last of the Tirion ("Watch-tower") to fall was the Gondyrn en Romen, the impregnable Stone Tree of the Great East Road. Commanded by Warden Marendil of House Rhudainor, he refused to acknowledge the puppet king of Rhudaur. Though, several of the strongholds of the kingdom had succumbed through treachery, the Witch-King's plans did not work on the tower held by Marendil, whose men's loyalty was unswerving. Though beseiged for three months by a force of orcs, hillmen and some traitorous dunedain, the walls would neither be breached by rock or sorcery. No flying thing could approach without suffering a hail of arrows, and no sorceror could transport a force of arms inside. At this time, though their morale had been high, the hearts of the men of the Watchtower sunk. Diggings were started out of bowshot by the evil forces. Indeed, from what news finally escaped at a later date, a great many trolls enslaved by Angmar were used. It became clear that they intended to take the tower from below. After one month of frantic watching, the hill and stone trolls of Angmar broke through the foundations of the tower, and made their way up through the tower. Though the Warden and his men had had nearly a month to devise a defense against this, nothing could withstand the force of the onslaught. It is said that a few prisoners were finally taken by some orcs who followed the trolls, but not before the trolls had eaten their fill of the dead. After this siege, the trolls were granted the area as a gift from their Master and the Trollshaws became doubly feared.....
